Adeline Waltz
Source: East Texas Serenaders
Arr. Matt Knoth & Clinton Davis
Key of E flat
This lovely gem, written by ETS guitarist, Cloet Hamman, was first recorded in 1929. Like many Texas bands recording in the late 1920’s and 30’s, ETS chose to record only waltzes and raggy numbers. Recording primarily their own compositions, their exquisite melodies and use of the technically difficult keys of E flat, B flat and F, helped to define their unique sound. Even though their recording success offered them the opportunity to travel and play in ballrooms across the United States the band preferred to stay close to home and play locally for social events, city functions and dances in Tyler, Lindale and Mineola Texas. This might be due to the fact that most of the members of ETS had day jobs.
DH was the only ETS who gave his occupation as musician, though he also worked as a printer, florist and undertaker.
“Adeline” features San Diego’s very own Clinton Davis on banjo, harmony fiddle and, notably, upright piano. Clinton’s lyrical piano solo is period-perfect, evoking the impromptus of Schubert or Chopin’s preludes, and is played with the technical skill and taste reserved for the finest of musicians.
