Key of B flat
Elise fell in love with this tune from Bob Carlin’s wonderful album, Banging and Sawing.
The tune, also called “Wild Goose Chase”, was in the lauded Burnett and Rutherford duo‘s repertoire from south eastern Kentucky. Dick Burnett, the blind guitarist and band leader was said to have learned the tune from Tennessee’s fiddling Governor, Robert Love Taylor (1850-1912). Clyde Davenport, a fiddler and banjo player from KY, grew up in the same area as the performing Burnett and Rutherford duo. In his mid-teens, Clyde discovered the duo and was deeply influenced by their repertoire and Leonard Rutherford’s smooth bowing style.
Katy Hill Harris usually plays guitar with Skillet Licorice, but here the talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist is playing upright bass. Katy’s phrasing is as nuanced and tasty as it is beautiful and perfectly timed. That’s why she gets the big bucks.
Skillet Licorice is always delighted when our dear friend and composer Erik Pearson plays with us. When Erik suggested that we use both of his banjo tracks (one on a nylon-stringed banjo, and one on steel) our response was: Naturally! Everybody wins with Dallas Dolby and that includes you.
