The ETS were equally comfortable playing at square dances or cosmopolitan dance halls. The bluesy fiddle playing by DH was accompanied by the driving rhythm of core ETS members Cloett Hamman, guitar, Patrick Henry Bogan, cello, and John Munnerlyn, tenor banjo. Like fiddler DH, both Bogan and Hamman came from musical families. Hamman learned guitar by backing up his father who was an award winning contest fiddler. Bogan first learned guitar as a youngster and later on picked up the bass and piano. Bogan originally played bass with the group, but decided to switch to cello as it was easier to transport, especially in the rain. He later removed a string from the cello because as he said, “He didn’t need it”.
The Three in One Two-Step, like a number of their up-tempo compositions, are a blend of other popular tunes. This one includes a large portion of the Dill Pickle Rag with strains of The Entertainer and I Don’t Love Nobody.
The great Bay-Area bass legend Tom “Tomcat” Drohan makes an appearance on this rollicking dance tune. Skillet Licorice has been playing with Tom since the very beginning. He’d probably be a permanent member of the band if he wasn’t already playing in 75 other bands. That’s how in-demand the Tomcat is.
