about

Source: Brad Leftwich and Ed Haley
Arr. Matt Knoth
Key of F

My exposure to this tune was through the playing of Brad Leftwich on the fantastic Tom, Brad and Alice CD We’ll Die in the Pigpen Fighting and of course from the playing of Kentucky fiddler Ed Haley.
The tune has a minor section that is very close to the melody of the 1896 Bert Williams’ song “Dora Dean”. Williams’ song was written in honor of African American entertainer Dora Dean, who, with her dance partner husband Charles Johnson, popularized the cakewalk dance on vaudeville wearing refined costumes and no black face. Their success in vaudeville led them to become the first African American couple to perform on Broadway. The tune also shares a similar melody to “I Don’t Love Nobody” in the key of C.

For fans of Ed Haley, I would highly recommend reading Brandon Ray Kirk’s blog posts In Search of Ed Haley. Personally, I was thrilled to read that Clayton McMichen (Skillet Lickers) was Haley’s favorite fiddler. (as told to BRK by Kentucky fiddler Snake Chapman)

“Dora Dean” features some wonderful cello playing by Thompson String Tickler, Ben Sigelman. Matt and Ben share a love for Riley Pucket’s guitar runs, and on this track that love is on bold display.
