The Gu-Achi Fiddlers, led by fiddlers Elliot Johnson and Lester Vavages, were the first commercially recorded string band from the Tohono O’Odham Nation in southern Arizona. Their distinct genre of traditional music, called waila (pronunciation “why-lah”), has history dating to the earliest days of the Catholic missionaries who introduced European string instruments to the Tohono communities for religious ceremonies. By the mid 1800’s, popular dance music (polkas, mazurkas, waltzes) had been introduced into the community most likely by travelers passing through Arizona on their way to the gold rush in California.
Up until the 1950’s waila fiddle bands performed for religious festivals, celebrations and community dances. The fiddle’s role eventually was replaced by saxophone and button accordion due to the influence of norteñeo music from Mexico.
The Gu-Achi Fiddlers were instrumental in reviving interest in the waila fiddle tradition after performing at the first annual All O’odham Fiddle Orchestra Contest in 1984. Although many waila tunes have no names, “The Libby Bird Song Mazurka” is sweetly named for Elliot’s niece.
As one of the founders of the Los Angeles Old-Time Social, Kelly Marie Martin needs no introduction. Kelly has been part of the Skillet Licorice musical consortium since its inception and we are honored to have her awesome bass playing on this beautiful mazurka.
