Source: East Texas Serenaders
Arr. Matt Knoth & Elise Engelberg
Key of F/B flat Major
Written by DH Williams (a rarity! a left-handed fiddler, playing left-handed!), this waltz was first recorded in Dallas in 1929. Daniel’s father was a fiddler from Tennessee and young Daniel would often sneak his father’s fiddle off the shelf. His father, after realizing Daniel had already learned a number of tunes on his own, bought him a left-handed instrument and gave him formal music lessons. In addition to his contributions to ETS, Daniel was a gifted contest fiddler and teacher. His most notable student was Johnny Gimble, a famous Texas fiddler.
Not everybody gets to record with one of their musical idols, and but so, the Allsorts Orchestra is honored to feature Suzy Thompson on harmony fiddles for the oft overlooked Meadow Brook Waltz. Matt’s love for the East Texas Serenaders’ catalog was ignited when he first heard Suzy’s band, The Thompson String Ticklers, play Dream Shadows. Suzy’s intricate harmonies and delicate counterpoints perfectly evoke the twin fiddles of DH Williams and Henry Lester.
