about

Source: Leroy Larson
Arr. Matt Knoth & Clinton Davis
Key of G minor

We brought the Scandinavian-American Old-Time CD with us on Skillet Licorice’s 2019 tour of Scandinavia and fell in love with this popular Finish tune (aka “Flowers of the Forest” and “Woodland Flowers”). We were initially drawn to the track by the similarity of its opening phrase to the intro to the ETS’s “Dream Shadows.” This similarity leads Matt to believe that Cloet Hamman may have been familiar with “Metsakukkia”. Usually played on accordion, our version features “zither” and piano.

Michael Downtown Brown, another former bandmate and frequent collaborator, mans the piano here, playing multiple counterpoints to his adapted melody. Mike then doubles the piano’s low harmony part on bowed bass. Clinton’s ethereal zither, mandolin, and violin parts are the sweet icing on this northern European epic.
