The “Shannon Waltz”, ostensibly the East Texas Serenaders’ “#1 hit”, was taught to fiddler Daniel Huggins Williams (“DH”) by a northern fiddler named Mr. Brisglsy, In addition to this waltz, Mr. Brigsley taught a few ragtime tunes and “The Sweetest Flower Waltz” to DH in the 1920’s. The East Texas Serenaders (“ETS”) were so fond of the “Shannon Waltz” that they recorded it in 1928 and again in 1937. This waltz is now part of the standard repertoire at Texas Fiddle Style contests.
Though many believe the tune to have been written in Ireland, we could find no evidence that “Shannon Waltz” is named for the River Shannon, or originated overseas at all.
This tune features the great multi-instrumentalist and singer Meredith Axelrod on cello. Meredith’s mighty yet elegant bowing lends the ideal low end to the Allsorts Orchestra rhythm section. Never simply alternating between the root and fifth, Meredith keenly selects the ideal chord tone to support the sophisticated melodies and changes of the Serenaders’ music.
